The 2nd episode of our CH101 show Skateboard Cop screened this weekend, and we came in 2nd place. As you no doubt know, 2nd place is the True 1st Place (due to channel 101’s archaic voting procedures), but I can’t help but think that if we had turned in a different cut of our show that we could have come in Fake 1st Place (actual 1st place).
When we were shooting, it became clear that the show was getting bogged down by the writing. It was nearly 7 pages long; no room for pacing, craft, or tact here.
In the edit I discovered a cleaner and overall better version of our show. I felt like it was the best version we could make, considering what we started with. Wade and Kelsy thought otherwise. I’m sure as writers, it’s not easy to hear that the words you typed into a computer program aren’t turning into the show you hoped for, but still…
I fought for this version and I lost. Still, I hope you like it.
Well, this is all bullshit.
There is no bigger fan of Trickster Steve than me. Ricky Carmona is one of my favorite performers and nicest people in the world. During the editing process I kept telling Ben, “More Trickster Steve, he’s the funniest part.” In a passive aggressive attempt to sidestep the collaborative process, Ben sent me this cut.
His immature plan backfired and I immediately fell in love with it. I told Kelsy and Ben we should submit this cut and do a “to be continued.” (Two birds with one stone as we then wouldn’t have to do any work on an April show.) They were too chicken to do it.
I think really Ben just doesn’t want to admit that he’s a better popcorn and cotton candy editor than he is a narrative story craftsman, as evidenced by this wonderfully fun and funny cut which is far superior to the trash we screened on Saturday.
I was very happy that Wade, Kelsy, and Ben asked me to be a part of this. It’s sad to see the West Coast/East Coast beef has come up again between Wade and Ben. I stand by both cuts. If you’d like to see the cut that aired on Saturday at the Channel 101 Screening you can here. Remember, friendship above cinema…..unless it’s like a really good movie. Like HEAT. Then screw your friends.
Anyone who knows me knows that I am a pushover. I’d never fight Ben or Wade about which cut to submit. So when Ben was like “Let’s submit the original version.” I knew it was a bad idea, but I kept quiet about it because, spineless. Then when Wade was like, “Yeah, Ben! Let’s submit the original version.” I had to leave the room. I wanted to say, “Are you guys crazy?! Trickster Steve IS THE ONLY THING GOING FOR THIS SHOW!” I knew that if I tried telling that to Ben and Wade they would’ve spit on my and shoved me in a trashcan :(
Anyway, here’s the perfect cut of our show. I love working with Ben and Wade even though they bully me. And everyone else was great too.
I don’t care what these jerks say. Both versions are works of art.
Little known fact, I worked on (the awesome) Pete Browngardt’s Secret Mountain Fort Awesome before it was kicked off of Cartoon Network! I’d have to say that it was one of the most intense, but fun productions I have ever worked on. I never threw any of the artwork up here, because, well… I’m forgetful. But I figured that I would now! I picked a few silly images to put here. There are lots more, but I seem to have misplaced them. When I come across them again, I will add them to the collection.
I truly loved working this production, and all the lovely people I got to meet on it.
Plus, drawing butts and pimples all day was fucking sweet.
My buddy Jenny is crazy talented and craaaazy awesome…..check out the rest of her tumblr if you haven’t already! (And you can check out her online store here!)
